'Cost Cuts to Blame' for BP Alaska Oil Spill

COST-CUTTING at BP was responsible for last year's oil spill in Alaska, US Congressional investigators indicated today.

In a blockbusting conclusion to a probe into the worst-ever spill on the tundra of the North Slope of thePrudhoe Bay oilfield, Congressman Bart Stupak said he had turned up a "mountain" of evidence showing the Alaskan environmental disaster was directly down to BP's attempts to save costs in the region.

The conclusion comes just weeks after BP was panned for failures in the Texas City refinery explosion two years ago, which killed 15 and injured hundreds of others, and amid fears of disarray at the top of the British supermajor in the last months of fallen chief executive Lord Browne's reign.

He resigned earlier this month amid a perjury scandal surrounding his gay lover.

Stupak, who heads the House of Representatives' Energy Committee's subcommittee on oversight and investigations, said: "My review of the mountain of circumstantial evidence can only lead me to the conclusion that severe pressure for cost cutting did have an impact on maintenance of pipelines. …
