Back in 1997 two very dear friends of mine lost their first born baby son Jordan, just four days after his birth. I held their beautiful baby in my arms two days after he was born, and two days before he died from a rare heart condition that had been undetected during my friend's pregnancy, or for the short time he lived.

One of the many things that struck me at the time was that my friends never pointed the finger or blamed anyone for Jordan's death and chose instead to accept their tragic loss with grace and dignity. To see two people I love going through the worst imaginable experience of their lives has to this day remained one of the saddest things I have witnessed in my personal life.

Thankfully they have since been blessed to have two more gorgeous children who they simply adore. When my friend gave birth to her second son, I clearly recall her telling me that she and her husband chose the name Theo, because they liked the name and because the meaning of the name is Gift of God.

I have always loved children, and while I don't have children of my own, I do have two wonderful stepchildren that I love dearly.

I'm also blessed to have very special relationships with all of my friend's children, as well as with many children I work with.

As I write my column a week in advance of it's publication, who can say how this week will unfold with news of little Madeleine McCann who has been abducted in Portugal, and whose shocking story has touched millions of people around the world.

Since this dreadful event took place, I have found myself observing children around Madeleine's age with their parents when I'm out and about, wondering if parents are feeling even more loving and protective towards their children, appreciating how lucky they are to have their own little "gifts" close by.

Children don't ask to be born and deserve all the love and care we can give them. …
