Friday night's graduation ceremonies for the 558 seniors at Orange Park High School were special in some way to each of them.

But for Jacob Whitney, the school co-valedictorian, it was an even greater event: It was his 18th birthday. And he was delighted at the showing for his big day.

"I am humbled and thankful. I can't believe you'd come to celebrate my 18th birthday," he joked to the crowd of hundreds during his message. "I can't wait to see the presents!"

In a speech punctuated with inside jokes, Whitney, whose grade-point average was 4.77, also offered a serious side.

To his teachers, he said, "Thanks for equipping us with knowledge for success. Thanks for giving us the foundation to go forward."

He challenged his classmates, saying, "We must make our own path. I know this class will succeed."

The other valedictorian, Jaimee Castillo, thanked her teachers for their support and help and her friends "for the memories. …
