GROUNDSMAN Norman Thurlow has never had it so good - but don't ask him about global warming.

The Great Ayton groundsman is an authority on most things cricket, and has been tending the Ayton square since taking early retirement 15 years ago.

And while he has never seen early season weather as good as this year's, he is too shrewd to guess as to why it has been so dry and warm.

"I can't comment on global warming because I don't know enough about it," he says, which in a way is as sensible a comment on the subject as you can get, because there are plenty of 'experts' who have no more knowledge than him, but still have plenty to say on the matter.

Norman will say only what he sees, and he added: "For the last couple of years we have got April weather in May and May weather in April.

"The season started hotter and drier than ever before in my time, and I had to leave the sprinkler on the square for two full days. …
