Two hundred girls from across Northumberland and Tyneside will take part in a football festival on Saturday at Ashington's Hirst Welfare Centre. The event, organised by the Northumberland FA and fast food chain McDonald's, is part of the McDonald's Football Festival Tour which sees 43 children's festivals held across England this year.

One team will be chosen to play at the McDonald's National Football Festival on August 6. Event organiser Gary Middleton said: "We've placed a big emphasis on promoting girls' football in the area so it's great to see so many teams emerging."

Riding success

DISABLED youngsters are riding to success thanks to a grant from the Newcastle Building Society Fund at the Community Foundation serving Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

The North-East branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association received pounds 500 to deliver an essential training course to volunteer instructors from across the region. The grant means the volunteers are now fully qualified ( able to lead riders at the association's latest competition at the Town Foot Stables in Shilbottle. …
