Bishop of Southwark Escapes Prosecution for Drinking

THE BISHOP of Southwark has escaped Church action over allegations that he had been drunk, it emerged today.

A secret Church of England report investigating Dr Tom Butler's behaviour following a Christmas party at the Irish embassy concluded there was "substantial" evidence that the bishop was drunk.

Dr Butler was found on 5 December in a stranger's car, throwing children's toys out of the window. He had suffered head injuries, lost his mobile phone, crucifix and briefcase when he was found outside Bishop's House in Streatham.

A preliminary investigation to the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested the bishop could face disciplinary action but a second report, in which the bishop was able to give hisown account of the events, has led to "no further action" being taken.

The bishop originally told his congregation he had been mugged. A complaint against Dr Butler was brought by John Adams, a former churchwarden from Croydon , and who lives in the bishop's diocese. …
