I had the wonderful pleasure of driving down a motorway the other day on my way home, and noticed a sign saying 'check your distance'.

That was odd, I thought, as there was not a following sign saying how many more monotonous miles there were before I reached my destination so how could I check my distance?

Anyway, as I mulled this over I did notice the sudden appearance of white V-shaped lines in the road. But they were so close together they made your eyes go dizzy. Aha, I thought, I bet this has something to do with the two-second gap rule and keep your distance which would explain the sign before. Kerching!

Now, on this particular day the motorway was not very busy but these white chevrons did my head in as I quickly realised you could not keep the gap of just one chevron, you would be too close to the driver in front. My confusion melted when another sign appeared explaining to keep two chevrons from the car in front. …
