Firefighters were continuing to tackle a blaze today after a horse rescue charity's barn went up in flames.

Two fire crews from Durham were called to the RSPCA Horse Rescue Centre in Waldridge Lane in Chester-le-Street.

The 25 metre-high barn, which contained 50 tonnes of hay, a boat and a motorbike, was well alight when they arrived.

As the flames reached the roof firefighters discovered asbestos and had to call out the special incident unit to deal with the hazardous material.

They also found a gas cylinder in the barn as they used jet pumps to put out the blaze which destroyed the boat and motorbike and left half of the barn damaged.

Emma Cragg, a groom at the horse charity, said: "The main barn that has gone up was a storage barn for the horses' food and we have now run out of hay.

"We would ask anybody who can help us with any donations to get in touch."

The RSPCA charity has been based at the farm in Waldridge Lane for 10 years and houses 29 horses. …
