Durham are just one step from an historic first appearance in a Lord's final after they held their nerve for the second day running with their last pair at the wicket.

The Riversiders batted all day and survived 101 overs against Lancashire to earn a battling LV County Championship draw on Saturday with their last two batsmen, Paul Wiseman and Graham Onions, at the crease.

Those who returned for a second helping in yesterday's crucial Friends Provident Trophy clash against Notts Outlaws had their nerves shredded again.

Chasing 239 for victory and a place in the last four, Durham still needed 21 when last man Neil Killeen joined Gareth Breese at the crease in the 47th over.

All-rounder Breese completed his half century and the West Indian was given admirable back-up by long-serving local product Killeen.

Breese then hit the last two balls of the penultimate over from Andrew Harris for consecutive fours to earn the Dynamos a famous victory and spark scenes of jubilation on and off the pitch.

Durham will top the Friends Provident Trophy Northern Conference if they win their final group game at second-placed Warwickshire on Wednesday.

A narrow defeat against the Bears, who would then finish level on points with Durham, could also be enough as the Riversiders have a better run rate than the Midlanders.

Winning the group would give Durham home advantage against the second-placed Southern Conference county on Wednesday week.

Breese, who finished unbeaten on a run-a-ball 68, just wants to repay the supporters' loyalty with a first cup final appearance at Lord's in August.

Breese said: "The fans are a fantastic bunch. They have stuck with us through the bad times and they deserve some payback.

"If Durham could pull it off it would be a great feeling for everyone in the North East and the club members. …
