Robinson in Fitness Race Ahead of World Cup Trials

JASON ROBINSON will undergo a knee operation on Tuesday but is expected to be fit for England's Rugby World Cup warm-up games in August.

The 32-year-old full-back, who will retire from rugby after the autumn tournament in France, will have an arthroscopy to clear out "minor debris" from his right knee, which he damaged in England's 58-10 defeat to South Africa in Bloemfontein on 28 May.

The injury forced Robinson, who was England captain on the ill-fated tour, to miss last Saturday's Second Test defeat to the Springboks in Pretoria.

Further investigation on his return to this country indicated Robinson requires the minor operation but it is anticipated he will be fit to take part in England's three World Cup warm-up Tests.

Brian Ashton's men face Wales at Twickenham on 4 August before tackling France home and away over the following two Saturdays.

Meanwhile, Francois Pienaar, South Africa's 1995 World Cup winning captain, believes his country can repeat that success this year. …
