A SENIOR judge accused of flashing at a woman commuter held up a pair of his pants in his defence today.

Lord Justice Richards flourished a pair of black or blue Calvin Klein briefs in the witness box at City of London magistrates court. He had been asked by his barrister, David Fisher QC what underwear he habitually wore.

"Like this", he said, holding the pants out in front of him.

The alleged victim had said she could not see any underwear as the judge's flies gaped open.

Sir Stephen, 56, denies exposing himself twice in eight days to a 25-year-old City worker on the crowded 8.10 Wimbledon to Waterloo train. He says he is a victim of mistaken identity.

Earlier, the father of three told the court of his "satisfying" sex life, describing his 31-year marriage to Lucy as "strong, fulfilled and happy".

Asked specifically to describe his sexual relationship with his wife, Sir Stephen answered: "I describe it as very loving and mutually satisfying." He added that he brought her at least one if not two cups of tea in bed every morning before leaving for work.

Denying the charges, Lord Justice Richards, who sits on the Court of Appeal, said: "I have no desire to engage in such behaviour whatsoever. I am a properly married family man and I cannot perceive deriving any form of gratification from exposing my penis.

"I would not want to cause any offence leading to alarm or distress to anyone.

I value greatly the attributes of courtesy and respect for other people and I hope that I have those attributes. I do believe that as a judge one has a responsibility of probity that goes beyond one's social responsibilities." Sir Stephen, in the witness box on the second day of the trial, testified in front of a district judge and two lay magistrates.
