AHIGHLIGHT of Architecture Week is its Architect in the House scheme, where architects offer a one-hour informal consultation in exchange for a donation to the charity Shelter. In 10 years, almost [pounds sterling]700,000 has been raised.

For Karen and Grenville Tanner of Pinner, taking part in the scheme meant working with an architect for the first time; it proved a great success.

After signing up for the scheme, the couple were introduced to local architect Pravin Raheja. They explained that they needed more space.

"We loved the street and neighbours but wanted to start a family; we could move or extend," says Karen.

"We liked Pravin immediately and he understood what we wanted. His first consultation drawings [in exchange for a donation of [pounds sterling]40] were almost perfect."

The modest two-bedroom bungalow has been expanded to become a luxurious three-bedroom home with two bathrooms, a garden extension, open-plan living space and a kitchen that has doubled in size and been given underfloor heating. …
