* PETER LINTHWAITES days must surely be numbered as chief executive at private-equity talking shop the BVCA. His pitiful performance before MPs on the Treasury Select Committee yesterday made him look caught-in-the-headlights and unprepared

despite the months of union agitation over his paymasters tax rates and profits. Had his communications advisers not prepared him for a savaging after the dismemberment of such slick operators as Matt Barrett of Barclays at the committees hands? We all know what the average private-equity executive would do to a chief executive of a company that failed to pass muster.

* TRIBUTES flowed yesterday for doughty Chinese community fighter Jabez Lam at a press conference to announce a generous settlement between the stallholders of north Londons Oriental City shopping mall and its owner, Development Securities, chaired by City veteran Michael Marks. Fai Lui, chairman of Oriental City Traders Association, told the gathering he couldnt have pulled off the settlement without Lam. Perhaps the greatest praise came from one of the developers present: Lams huge strength is that he is totally principled, and they dont teach you how to deal with that at property school.
