'Gateway' Hotel Plan Gets the Thumbs Up

Planners have given their unanimous backing to a pounds 5.6m project to create a new roadside hotel and conference centre in Northumberland.

Design consultant Matt Ritson wants to transform the site of a derelict diner and filling station next to the main A1 road at Stannington into a major new "gateway" complex for visitors to the county.

His scheme ( which could create up to 90 jobs ( has been warmly welcomed by local people and traders in nearby Morpeth as an exciting development which will benefit the area.

Now it has been given the unanimous backing of members of Castle Morpeth Council's development services committee.

The visually striking development has been designed to recreate the look of an historic Northumberland castle, rather than a traditional roadside motel. It includes a 40-bedroom hotel, conference centre for 120, a restaurant, cafe and visitor information point, and Mr Ritson believes it will tap into the 30,000 vehicles a day which pass the site. …
