Fears Rise for BBC Reporter as Hamas Seizes Control of Gaza

BRITISH diplomats said today they were "very worried" for the safety of kidnapped BBC correspondent Alan Johnston amid the bloodshed in Gaza.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett raised the case of Mr Johnston in talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday.

A senior Foreign Office diplomat said: "We are very worried about Alan Johnston's situation. The situation in Gaza now is very worrying from that point of view." Diplomats are not understood to have received any fresh information, leading to concerns over Mr Johnston's fate.

Bloodshed has riven Gaza for more than a week.

Hamas Islamic militants have now seized full control of the region from their secular rivals Fatah. President Abbas yesterday dissolved the Hamasled government and declared a state of emergency. He will try to rule by decree.

More than 100 people are thought to have died. Green Hamas flags were flying over Racist guilty most of Gaza and its supporters celebrated in the streets. …
