Mike Keenan returned to the NHL as coach of the Calgary Flames on Thursday - his eighth head coaching job in the league.

Keenan replaces Jim Playfair, who will remain with the team as an associate coach after leading the Flames to the playoffs in his one season as head coach.

"Together, they will do remarkable things for this team," Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said at a news conference.

The well-traveled Keenan won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994, and Thursday was the 13th anniversary of that title.

WARD TO BE ASSISTANT COACH ON PREP TEAM IN HOUSTON

Charlie Ward has been an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets, and he won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback for Florida State. Now he'll try his hand as an assistant high school basketball coach.

Ward, who won the Heisman in 1993, has been hired by Westbury Christian High School in Houston as an assistant coach for the varsity boys basketball team.

"My goal is to become a head coach somewhere," Ward said Thursday. "This is a very good stepping stone for me."

Ward played 11 years in the NBA - 10 years with the New York Knicks and one year with the Houston Rockets - before becoming an assistant coach.

LAKERS' BRYANT VISITS BARCELONA SOCCER PRACTICE

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant made a surprise visit to Spain to watch FC Barcelona in training before the team's final game this weekend.

Bryant, who lived in Europe for eight years and is an avid soccer fan, watched quietly from the sidelines and hugged Barcelona midfielder Ronaldinho after the training session.

"I came to enjoy my favorite football team," Bryant said after security guards let him into the Nou Camp stadium. "It is a privilege to be able to watch Barca train."

MONTANA FOOTBALL PLAYER CHARGED WITH MURDER

University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson was charged with murder in Palmdale, Calif., after being accused of shooting a man during an altercation earlier this month.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Antelope Valley Press of Palmdale that Wilson was in custody Wednesday. A deputy, Kelly Simon, identified Wilson as a football player for Montana, a Division I-AA playoff team. …
