Nassau County nonprofit organizations traditionally funded by the County Commission reacted with disappointment last week as they found out they would get less or no funding in fiscal year 2007-08.

Although the budget isn't yet final, the commission reduced funding to nonprofits June 27 by $222,000, compared to last year.

Sutton Place Board President Malcolm Noden said Friday a proposed $101,000 cut not only would hurt its ability to provide mental health and substance abuse services in Nassau, including to the indigent, it also may violate a state and county agreement regarding funding, he said. Sutton Place is also known as the Nassau County Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council.

"Instead of coming hat in hand, we come legislative mandate in hand," Noden said. "The county has no discretion with the funding for us. The state has a clearly defined, mandated share agreement. The county does not have the option to unilaterally change the options of this match. …
