FERNANDINA BEACH - The City Commission has created an arts council to promote awareness, appreciation and interest in all types of arts throughout the city.

The council will have seven members - one each nominated by the Amelia Community Theatre, Fernandina Little Theatre, the Amelia Island Arts Association, the Amelia Arts Academy, the Amelia Island Book Festival, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival - and one resident appointed by commissioners.

The council will recommend to commissioners grants to apply for to fund art-related programs, facilities and awareness. It will also work with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to recommend new facilities and infrastructure to improve enjoyment of the arts.

Commissioner Ron Sapp thought of creating a council as a way to help all arts groups in the city get more funding.

"When we do give grants to nonprofit groups, it can get political," he said Thursday. …
