SUNDERLAND have continued the clear-out of their squad by loaning Clive Clarke and Marton Fulop to Championship side Leicester City, writes STUART RAYNER.

And the departures are set to continue, with Tobias Hysen and Graham Kavanagh likely to leave before the transfer window closes at midnight on August 31.

Clarke and Fulop were surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light this season and have joined the Foxes for three and 12 months respectively. Their departure takes the number of Black Cats players out on loan to four.

Stephen Wright is due to spend the next five months at Stoke City, while Arnau Caldentey Riera is on a season-long loan at Scottish Premier League Falkirk. Only Stephen Elliott has been sold from the squad which won the Championship in May, rejoining former manager Mick McCarthy at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Fulop was Sunderland's first-choice goalkeeper in pre-season but the arrival of Craig Gordon for a British record pounds 9m saw him drop down the pecking order. With Darren Ward preferred as the back-up keeper in the club's opening two Premier League games he has been sent back to the Championship for a season.

The 24-year-old Hungarian has never been lacking in self-confidence and this summer warned Cats manager Roy Keane he would not settle for a place on the bench. "I want to play every single match because my aim is to be the first-choice goalkeeper of the Hungarian national team," he said in June.

"I didn't get as many chances as I wanted last season. When Sun-derland signed me, I was told I would be first-choice keeper for a long period."

Fulop's failure to play a competitive game this season has not stopped him being named in Hungary's squad to face Italy in a friendly on Wednesday.

Although highly regarded within the game, he has yet to play Premier League football. …
