TRAVELLERS parked in a seaside town have been ordered to move on.

About 20 caravans arrived at the Briardene car park, at The Links in Whitley Bay, on Monday evening.

Residents informed the authorities and a notice was served on Wednesday asking the group to leave.

It costs 80p to park at the site for every two hours.

There are signs stating: "No overnight camping."

One elderly woman, who lives in the area, said: "It is quite bizarre. I saw the caravans arrive on Monday evening.

"They came in threes and were very orderly, so they did not hold up traffic.

"I thought they had probably come for a funfair or similar event.

"This is a public car park and they are not allowed to stay.

"Members of the public can't find any room to park and are having to go somewhere else."

A 54-year-old man, of The Links, said: "This is a nice picturesque area, with green space running along the coast.

"You can immediately spot these caravans as you drive up.

"They look completely out of place.

"We have not had any trouble from the group. There have been no problems with noise or nuisance. …
