SHOPLIFTERS have been sent a clear warning: stay out of the city.

Plain clothes and uniformed officers targeted suspects in Newcastle.

Scores of known offenders were spotted, stopped and checked.

The crackdown was in response to a rise in shoplifting, and further operations will follow over the coming weeks.

Sgt Nick Gilks, head of the retail crime unit, said: "This was primarily about finding and arresting shoplifters in Newcastle and, as a by product, getting valuable information about criminal movement.

"We stopped and checked 76 people, and there were only nine of them who were not already know to us. This was not at random. We stopped people for a reason and were correct to do so.

"Forty four of the people we stopped, well over half, actually had shoplifting offences already."

Wednesday's operation was run from Market Street police station where the retail crime team met to team up with an additional support group.

The team went to the Manors Metro station to catch shoplifters travelling into the city centre.

Following that, they made their way to the centre of Newcastle, splitting up to inspect some of the usual haunts known to shoplifters, as well as inspecting tickets at Monument Metro station. …
