NEWCASTLE student Benjamin Cross has specs appeal.

The 20-year-old from Heaton, Newcastle, has been named North East spectacle wearer of the Year in the after taking part in modelling competition.

Benjamin beat off stiff competition from a bevy of bespectacled beauties at the semifinal, held at opticians Specsavers in Leeds.

A modest Benjamin said: "I was really shocked when I won. The competition had been tough as everyone looked great in their new glasses.

"It was so much fun participating, and I am glad my friend entered me. I am really looking forward to the trip down to London and to meeting the other regional finalists."

The decision was made by a panel of top judges, including Melissa de Beer from model agency MOT, journalist Stephanie Smith and Specsavers staff Tina Whitaker and Justine Nelson.

Contestants were judged on their facial features, hair, vitality and personality.

Justine Nelson said: "I'm delighted that we have such a strong contestant in Benjamin to represent the North East at the international final in London. …
