THIS year's Hexham Abbey Festival, opening next month, is the largest yet - and this time includes a number of daytime events. The first of the festival's classical events is in the town's Queen's Hall arts centre with Pimlico Opera bringing Gounod's Romeo and Juliet there on Friday September 28. The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets, from pounds 6 to pounds 14.50, can be booked at the hall on (01434) 652477.

The next day the abbey itself will be the venue for Brahms' German Requiem, with David Murray conducting the Hexham Abbey Festival Chorus & Orchestra along with soprano Alison Pearce and baritone Philip Smith. The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, also includes Brahms' Academic Festival Overture and Schicksalslied song cycle. Tickets, from the Queen's Hall number above, are pounds 8, pounds 12 and pounds 15.

On Sunday September 30 a Festival Eucharist takes place at 10am with a performance of Mozart's Mass in D minor and the premiere of Christopher Gower's Jesu, and at 6.30pm the combined choirs of Hexham Abbey and Newcastle Cathedral gather for Evensong. Philip Smith makes his second appearance at this year's festival at 1pm in the Queen's Hall on Monday October 1. The prize-winning baritone gives a recital of English song which includes Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel and Finzi's To A Poet, along with pieces by Britten and Warlock and a new work by the festival's artistic director, Graham Coatman. Pianist Young-Choon Park gives a recital at the centre at 7.30 that evening of sonatas by Haydn and Mozart, Chopin's Scherzo in B flat minor, and Beethoven's Pathetique and Appassionata sonatas. …
