ALNWICK Castle in Northumberland is the number one tourist destination in Britain, a survey has revealed.

But the same survey rates the iconic Angel of the North as one of the biggest visitor let-downs.

Alnwick Castle, perhaps best known as the setting for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, came top in a poll of 1,276 tourists.

The ancient stately home is rated above Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London and the majestic Holkham Bay in Norfolk.

But the Angel of the North in Gateshead has been rated number two in a top 10 list of the most disappointing sights.

Stonehenge is the only attraction more disappointing than the 66-foot Angel, according to the survey by Virgin Travel Insurance.

Gateshead Council cabinet member John McElroy said: "This comes as a complete surprise. Most people who go there tell me how much they enjoy it.

"Everyone who I've taken there says it's amazing. It's in a prominent position, you can see as far as the river and out to County Durham. …
