BLYTH SPARTANS have stepped up their bid to land Whitley Bay striker Phil Bell following the midweek 4-0 drubbing at Gainsborough Trinity, (writes JEFF BOWRON).

Bay were unimpressed by the Spartans' initial three-figure bid for the contracted player, but Blyth are confident of signing what would be their second forward named Bell.

Scott Bell proved to be an astute capture from another Northern League club Brandon United and was top scorer last season.

Phil Bell will add height and goals to the Blyth attack and manager Harry Dunn will attempt to tie up the deal.

He said: "We have made Whitley Bay another offer and if that is turned down will continue to pursue Bell and will take it to a tribunal.

"We need another frontman. I am still looking about for players, but there will be no knee-jerk reaction to the Gainsborough defeat.

"Good players do not become bad ones overnight, but we need to strengthen and we must step it up or else we will end up also-rans.

"We are determined not to let it slip because we have worked too hard to get where we are. …
