TRAPPED IN FIRE DRAMA; Residents Led Upstairs to Safety as Smoke Engulfs Flats

SEVERAL people were trapped in a block of flats in smoke-logged corridors as firecrews rushed to tackle a blaze.

Residents in Wrynose Gardens in Stockton had to be led upstairs to the second floor after the fire started at about 10.30pm last night.

An accidental fire had started in a utility room on the first floor with the roombeing totally gutted by the blaze.

Two fire appliances from Stockton station attended the incident in the Newtown area with the blaze being put out at 10.50pm.

Plasterer Sean Smith, 21, who lives on the second floor with his girlfriend KellyHope, 20, said itwas pure luck that he smelled the smoke and was able to warn others.

He said: "It was lucky because I was going to bed but then I decided to check the football scores.

"I smelled the smoke and told my girlfriend.

"At first we thought it was in our kitchen, but then we looked out the back window and saw what was happening.

"We warned the elderly people across the corridor. …
