BULLDOGS NOTEBOOK; Richt Still Undecided on Some Key Starters

Article excerpt

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia coaches spent a late night Friday breaking down scrimmage film, hit the practice field on Saturday morning for a short workout and then headed to fans' Picture Day.

Remaining depth chart decisions won't be solidified before Monday, coach Mark Richt said.

"I'm sure coaches might have some things in their minds but we have not discussed anything yet," Richt said. "We'll probably get some time to talk over the weekend."

The biggest questions still to be determined are starters at tailback, wide receiver and cornerback.

"How important is that starting lineup?" Richt said. "There's definitely prestige to it. You get your picture on the big scoreboard and I know that guys are fighting for that. At a lot of these positions it's a matter of who's going to start and then after that there will be a lot of substitution going on."

That's the case at tailback where Thomas Brown, Kregg Lumpkin and Knowshon Moreno will all play, Richt said.

"Whether people like it or not, they're all very talented and they all are ready to play and they're going to play," he said.

At cornerback, Bryan Evans and Thomas Flowers have lined up with the No. 1 unit, but Evans hasn't practiced fully for two weeks because of a pulled hamstring and doesn't feel secure about his position. Prince Miller and Asher Allen are also candidates.

"The wide and short corner have been switching every other day," said Evans, who is from Jacksonville. "There's really no set depth chart right now. Everybody's still out there competing, trying to get the starting spot for the first game."

Sean Bailey says the same is true at wideout. Bailey and Mikey Henderson were projected starters, but Michael Moore is challenging Henderson.

The starting offensive line appears set: tackles Trinton Sturdivant and Chester Adams, center Fernando Velasco and guards Scott Haverkamp and Chris Davis. Brannan Southerland is the fullback and Tripp Chandler the tight end after serving a one-game suspension.

Kelin Johnson and CJ Byrd appear secure as the starting safeties.

Richt thinks the defensive front seven is all but set with tackles Jeff Owens and Kade Weston, ends Marcus Howard and Rod Battle and starting linebackers Darius Dewberry at weakside, Dannell Ellerbe in the middle and Brandon Miller at strongside. …
