THE Port of Tyne has strengthened its board with the appointments of SIR LES ELTON as deputy chairman and FRANK NICHOLSON as director.

Sir Les Elton joined the board on the retirement of Frank Nicholson who was in the role from July 2004 to June 2007. He is also a member of the finance committee and the remuneration committee. He was knighted in June 2005 for services to local government and is also a Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, a visiting Professor with the Business School and a council member at Newcastle University.

Frank Nicholson is former managing director of Vaux Breweries in Sunderland and holds a number of non-executive directorships including at Lycetts insurance brokers in Newcastle.

Also appointed is First Class Master Mariner SIMON BEECHINOR. He began working for P&O Steam Navigation and Swire Pacific Ship Management in 1975 and continued to achieve in managing businesses within the maritime services industry, both overseas and within the UK.

Consett-based electrical contractor McVickers Ltd has promoted MAC HOPPER to commercial director. Since joining McVickers just over four years ago Mac has been instrumental in extending the company client base and has shared his extensive experience on a wide range of contracting projects. He is responsible for procuring and tendering commercial contracts and for business development.

The firm has also promoted CATHERINE BELL to financial director. After working for the company for over 10 years spending the majority as office manager she will continue to oversee the day to day activities within the general office and undertake all financial matters including the production of monthly management accounts.

Gateshead-based bus operator Go North East has brought its public relations function in-house and appointed IRIS BOYD as its PR Manager. …
