LAUREN Sawyers and Gary Bennett were among those to gain top marks at Whitley Bay High School.

The pair said they had worked very hard for their results and hit out at any suggestion the exams were getting easier.

Lauren, 16, of Redhouse Farm, scored six A*s, in science, food technology, textiles, English and English literature, and two As.

She said: "I was just excited to be opening my results. It was the waiting and suspense that was the bad part.

"I didn't expect to get six A*s and I'm very pleased with the grades I got.

"I don't know what I want to do further but I will be coming back for sixth form and will possibly study textiles as I really enjoy that, or English.

"I don't think it's right to say the exams are getting easier. We have put in a lot of hard work and these were our first proper exams. …
