PROTESTERS in a Northumberland village have lost their battle against plans to create a motorbike racing circuit on nearby land.

The motocross track at West Sleekburn, near Bedling-ton, is aimed at addressing a shortage of such facilities in the North-East and tackling problems caused by illegal use of off-road bikes.

The project was supported by Northumbria Police but opposed by a 116-name petition and 25 letters of objection from people in West Sleekburn and nearby Cambois.

Objectors say the circuit will cause problems of noise, dust, mud on local roads and extra traffic, and fear the racing activities will harm wildli fe.

Now applicant Peter Johnson, a motocross enthusiast from Blyth, has been granted planning permission by Wansbeck District Council to operate the facility on a maximum of three days a week, from 10am to 4pm.

However, approval has only been granted until December next year so that council officers can monitor the site and act on any complaints made by residents. …
