The Journal: Minister's Thinking Skill May Need Work

NOT many parents will appreciate the blase response of Beverley Hughes to new research from one of the region's leading universities.

It shows that the thinking skills of 35,000 children studied over the past six years have not improved, despite the introduction of a whole slew of new initiatives.

This worries the report's author Dr Christine Merrell, as indeed it will parents, some of whom will share her belief that new measures ought to be introduced cautiously, then be closely monitored and changed in areas where they are not working.

Ms Hughes, the Children's Minister, may also be in agreement, although one could be excused for not gaining that impression from her immediate response to the research from the Durham University team.

Now, it should be said that there is no doubting the Government's intent in this area. The billions of pounds of taxpayers' money pumped into improving what it terms "outcomes for children" are proof of that. …
