Sharon's on the Run for Love of Mum

FOR Sharon Rookes, her mum Doris was always the number one person in her life.

The 35-year-old care assistant and mum-of-two will show how much her mother meant to her when she takes part in a 10km run at Alnwick Castle next Sunday in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Sharon, from Smillie Road, Horden, near Peterlee, County Durham, will join 999 other runners, including her partner Elvis Tsouma.

But she will proudly wear the Number One number on her running vest after organisers decided that her reasons for taking part in the run were especially poignant.

Her mother, who lived in Haswell, County Durham, died in June, aged 67, from a cancerous brain tumour.

Sharon explained: "I was very close to my mother and I am doing this run for her.

"I have a feeling she will be up there looking down on me.

"Elvis encouraged me and he is taking part in the run alongside me. He runs to and from work in Peterlee every day.

"I've been practising on the treadmill to make sure I can last the distance next Sunday. …
