AS we look forward to a new term starting in our schools, colleges and universities across the region, it is important for businesses to reflect on what they have to offer young people who are leaving education for the first time.

For many, the past few weeks have been a crucial time as both GCSE and A-level results have been released. This is a turning point for many as they look towards the world of work for inspiration for their next steps, and subsequently it is important that they can easily see the scope for career progression here in the North-east.

With this year's proposals to change the school curriculum to prepare students more practically for the world of work, there has never been a better time for businesses to start talking to the education sector about what types of skills they would like to see in school leavers.

As we find these proactive companies, we are shouting about it to motivate others in our continued campaign to urge employers in all sectors and from all sizes of business across the North-east to ask what they are doing to stem the skills shortage that lies ahead. …
