HOW do you test your tyres? Give them a glance, a kick perhaps to check the pressure seems about right?

Maybe you check them before heading off on a long drive but otherwise don't give them a second thought.

If that's the case, then you're not alone .

A survey Arval conducted among drivers found that 18% admitted only checking tyres once a quarter and, more worryingly, 11% said they didn't check their tyres at all.

But 70% said they checked tyres at least monthly, with half kicking tyres on a weekly basis. However, if you multiply the 11% across the UK, there's potentially tens of thousands of cars on the roads with poorly-maintained tyres.

The consequences of driving on bad tyres are significant. You need good tyres to drive safely. They affect the steering, braking and acceleration of your vehicle.

Faulty tyres work less efficiently and don't last as long. They could mean a heavy fine and penalty points on your licence. Police can hand out a three-point penalty for each tyre viewed non-roadworthy. …
