Vipers' Venom Will Get Even Stronger

NEWCASTLE Vipers head coach Rob Wilson today fired a chilling message to the rest of the Elite League when he promised: "We'll get even better as the campaign goes on."

Canadian coach Wilson (pictured right) guided his side to an opening night victory against Hull Stingrays on Saturday and followed it up in style at the Metro Radio Arena last night with a convincing win over title contenders Nottingham Panthers.

The two early triumphs arrived despite the fact that Wilson tore last term's roster apart and rebuilt it.

He set off on a summer transfer trek to ensure his mix of European and North American stars would be ready to challenge for honours.

Wilson, in his first season since hanging up his skates and heading for the dugout as bench coach, told the Chronicle: "I'm happy with the start, of course I am. To win both the opening two games is brilliant for us, but I expect us to get much better.

"I would be shocked if we don't score a minimum of three goals in our home games.

"Our fans shouldn't expect to come here and see us take 1-0 wins our grind out 2-1 wins. We are going to go for the throats of the opposition as soon as that puck drops.

"I am defensively-minded, but we will be a hard team to break down if we get a lead.

"We came out hard last night and against Hull and I am really happy."

Last night the Vipers wasted no time in getting involved in the physical side of things and the gloves were off after only five seconds with Panthers' Ryan Shmyr and Vipers' Andre Payette collecting fighting majors.

But it was the home side who opened the scoring at 6.23 with a powerplay strike by Jeff Hutchins. Panthers levelled at 10.47 thanks to Matt Myers, but the home side went into the opening break in the lead with another powerplay goal, this time from Mark Gouette at 19. …
