WHAT are the plans for The Observer to fit in with The Guardian'sinternet strategy ahead of the move to new offices in King's Cross next year?Minds have been focused by a series of "24/7" workshops which staff from bothpapers have attended recently. Some Obs and Guardian staff openly disagreedabout whether to hold stories for a Sunday or break them early on the web. Thefear among Obs journalists is that the paper is destined to become "TheGuardian on Sunday". The rumours from the top of the Guardian Media Groupcertainly suggest that the future of The Obs as a stand-alone brand is now upfor discussion.

"It's blank-piece-of-paper time," claims one source.

FORMER Sunday Telegraph editor Patience Wheatcroft had her leaving party lastnight at the Ha-ha bar in Victoria. "It's my wake," she joked to friends.Meanwhile, the story goes that the last person to hear about Wheatcroft'sdeparture was the man in charge of the paper's news operation, Tim Woodward. Hewas on holiday abroad and, despite repeated calls and messages to his mobile,colleagues couldn't get hold of him. Apparently Woodward learned the news onlywhen his father-in-law told him on the phone at the weekend.

BSkyB boss James Murdoch (right) will need to be on his best behaviour tomorrowwhen he hosts the Cambridge Media Convention, a big three-day pow-wow withfellow TV chiefs. I hear Murdoch has riled some of them after he gloated lastweek that Sky had not got involved in "grubby" phonein competitionsunlike ITV, Channel 4 and Five.

Au contraire, says one rival broadcaster, who points out that Sky was "one ofthe early movers in this space" with a show called Sky Quiz Live, which ran forsix months.

MUCH chatter about the sophisticated spin operation being run by the parents ofMadeleine McCann. The talk is that the McCann camp was in direct contact withseveral red-top editors as the drama involving Portuguese police unfolded lastweek. …
