NEED A CHUCKLE?

Between spying scandals, testosterone-tainted feats and contrived championships like the FexEx Cup and Nextel Cup Chase, it's a nice reprieve when sports provokes a chuckle. To wit:

A NEW RACKET

Retiring ATP player Justin Gimelstob got a jumpstart on his broadcasting career after being bounced by Andy Roddick in the first round of the U.S. Open. USA Network allowed him to conduct the postmatch interview. His first question of Roddick?

"What were the keys to the match, besides you being way better than me?"

RACK HIM!

Syndicated sports radio host Jim Rome, ever the defender of all that is SoCal, couldn't stifle a laugh following a call from a Nebraska fan from Omaha Thursday who was calling out USC fans. The two nationally ranked football teams meet Saturday at the L.A. Coliseum.

Paraphrasing here, the 'Husker fan ripped "botox-laden" Southern Californians for having a tanning salon on every corner: "Didn't you hear? The sun is free."

There are two paths Greg Oden's career could take following Thursday's microfracture surgery to repair knee damage, which will sideline the Portland Trail Blazers rookie center this season.

He could become David Robinson, the only other No. 1 pick in NBA Draft history to sit out his rookie year, or he could turn out to be Sam Bowie. The latter, does not rekindle fond memories for the folks from the Rose City.

Bowie was selected second overall in the 1984 draft by Portland - after Hakeem Olajuwon and before Michael Jordan - but was sent packing after playing only 139 games in four seasons following five leg surgeries. While Olajuwon and Jordan were exalted as members of the NBA's 50th Anniversary all-time team, Bowie became the answer to a trivia question after posting career averages of 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds over 10 seasons. …
