DODGING around the highways and byways is always a pleasant experience, but when it's behind the wheel of the new Dodge Nitro, it takes on a whole new meaning.

Dodge is no stranger to innovation and the Nitro, a chunky 4x4 SUV, is a prime example of the art of automotive innovation.

Its bold, assertive exterior is a statement of intent.

Behind its high belt line, large headlamps, crosshair grille and flared wheel arches lurks a rather sophisticated piece of machinery.

The front legroom is 40.8 inches the rear legroom 38.8 inches. Headroom is 40.4 inches at the front and 40.1 inches at the rear.

Its seating is wide, deep and comfortable, and the reclining rear seats can be folded flat to allow Nitro to offer more than 70 cubic feet of luggage space.

There are lots of other storage spaces dotted around the interior, but it is the tailgate area that attracts the most attention with the innovative two floor 'Load 'n Go" system.

This system, which is available only on the higher specification SXT, consists of a sliding top floor which is strong enough to support up to 400lb when extended. When loaded, the tray slides back effortlessly into the vehicle. Other factors of note in the cabin, are the three pod instrument panel - similar to those seen on motorcycles - an excellent air conditioning unit and an eight speaker 'MyGig & Sound' package that includes DVD application.

This entertainment set-up is for the 'tech savvy' generation allowing people to transfer music or download photographs via a USB port on the radio face.
