Letter: Time to Show the Dunkirk Spirit; Voice of the North

WHERE has the Dunkirk spirit that the British people are so famous for, gone at present? Northern Rock, the lending bank which has put the North of England on the financial map of the British Isles, is suffering in the short term because of the global credit squeeze.

We are living in dramatically changing financial times. The Rock (as it was known in the mid-1900s) may be the first lending bank to secure the backing of the Bank of England, but others may follow if these uncertain trends continue.

Let us listen to what the management team of Northern Rock are telling us and not betray this former local building society, which has grown quickly since it became a bank in 1997.

It has done so much for charity through its Foundation, sponsoring the excellent sport in the region, and given many millions of people their first chance to buy a home of their own with very attractive mortgage rates through the last half century. …
