BRIDGING THE GENERATIONS; Sting and Maximo Park Gig Together

THIRTY years ago, a band led by a lad from the North East was making waves on the music scene. That band was The Police.

Fast-forward to 2007 and another band with North East links, Maximo Park, is creating similar waves.

There was a meeting of minds between the two at the weekend when they bridged the generation gap to play the same gig.

Maximo Park was in the support slot for Sting's reunited Police - and lead singer Paul Smith is still pinching himself about it.

"It's ridiculous. It's truly outside of my thought patterns - that's why it remains interesting."

Paul, who lives in Newcastle, told Angel Eyes of meeting the supergroup.

"Sting walked in and he looked at me. I looked at him and we shook hands. He said 'hey, you sounded great' and I said 'thanks man'.

"The gig was at Twickenham, in front of 60,000. When we first came on it was a half-empty stadium and people were getting pints.

"Some people probably had a consciousness of it, but throughout the 50-minute set the audience grew and grew," recalled Paul. …
