WHEN I needed to call out a plumber, I found the number online. I did most of my Christmas shopping without leaving the house. When I last renewed my car insurance, I compared quotes on a website.

And for many of the 19.7 million of us who now shop online in the UK, it's exactly the same - the internet is fast becoming the first port of call, whether it's for browsing the high street, finding reviews of a product or checking prices.

According to Yahoo's latest figures, we spent an average of pounds 627 each via the internet in the last six months, and 63% of the total number of online Brits (around 34.2 million) say they've changed their mind about what brand to buy based on what they've read online.

So you don't have to be an IT genius to see that online sales are becoming more and more important to traditional high street retailers, with revenue from the internet expected to double to more than pounds 78bn by 2010.

They're immense figures which companies - whether large or small - simply can't afford to ignore.
