A TOP wholesaler looks set to boost the local economy by clinching a major school contract.

North-East based Lowries Wholesale has made significant inroads in the food service marketplace.

It has won a contract to supply groceries and provisions to 204 Northumberland schools and social care establishments for the next three years.

Lowries operate from three depots in the North of England - Newcastle, Hexham and Penrith.

It provides a delivered service and cash and carry facility from each site.

An extensive product range is available including ambient grocery, chilled and frozen foods, catering disposables and - for the licensed trade - a comprehensive range of beers, wines and spirits.

Lowries is an independent business but benefits from membership of the pounds 1.1bn Landmark Wholesale buying group who provide marketing support, own label products, supplier cost price maintenance and a full promotional programme. As a result of this new contract, over pounds 250,000 has been invested in technology, transport and staff to ensure the contract can be met efficiently, and all within the local area.

Heading up the development of the food service business is Mel Sherwin, general sales manager.

Mel has recently joined Lowries and has over 30 years of food service experience.

Lowries has always been focused on service and quality and in order to recognise this externally have committed to achieve ISO 9001 certification in quality management systems.

Principal of Lowries Peter Lowrie said: "We are delighted to have gained the contract for the Northumberland schools as it is not only a boost for our company but also for the local economy.

"All the investment we've made - and will continue to make as a result of this contract - will be, where possible, put back into the North-East. …
