Q. I have just bought my first house. I want to make it look homely but have a tight budget for decorating. Can you help?

MICHELLE says: Thanks to the high street stores, local markets and antique shops it is possible to create a luxurious home on a shoe string budget.

My top tips are:

Shop around. If time is on your side keep an eye out for sales and clearance of stock. Sometimes you can pick up designer furnishings and accessories at half the price.

Look for key features for a room which can act as a focal point. For example a striking print or large mirror (available within most homeware stores) can add impact to a room.

Instead of painting the whole room select one feature wall to paper or paint.

If the flooring is looking a little tired instead of replacing it opt for some brightly coloured rugs in different shapes and sizes. Not only will these hide any worn patches but they will bring colour into a room.

Instead of replacing a sofa why not invest in some decorative throws and scatter cushions. Charity shops are often a good place to find these and if you haven't a particular colour pattern in mind you can mix and match to create a bo-ho chic living space.

To add colour to a room why not paint the panels within a door a different shade to the walls. This is less expensive than redecorating the whole room and is an instant update.

Q. How do I get a marble effect on wall? Can you give any advice on this technique. I think you mix something with paint then with a small brush, create a zigzag line from one corner to another and rub or brush.

EDWARD says: Marbling results can vary as much as the marbles you are trying to imitate. It's a good idea to have a piece of marble you like before starting your project to mimic its colours and veining. Choose base coats and top coats to match the desired base marble and the textured effects respectively. …
