YET again I am outraged at the way travelling families have been branded as filthy gypsies.

I spent many nights over the summer reading venomous comments in Vent Your Spleen about travelling families who had set up camp in Whitley Bay.

Now we have Washington residents on their soap box.

We don't all have the luxury of being able to afford quality housing, even though we do work hard to keep ourselves and our families. Where we choose to live should be an individual's choice.

Are you aware that travelling families are classed as a minority group? Mention the word 'discrimination' and large organisations, as well as public services, are quick to show how they target services at those 'hardest to reach'.

But when we talk about discrimination and minorities, we tend to think of skin colour.

Who supports the travellers?

Would it be too much to ask for a skip, portable toilets (like the ones at the Great North Run), and mobile showers for two to three weeks of the year? …
