TOMMY Cassidy threatened action soon after taking over as manager of Newcastle Blue Star and he has been true to his word this week after parting company with David Nicholls and Derek Townsley, both signed from Gretna during the close season.

The former Newcastle United and Northern Ireland explained "I knew I needed to make changes. The pair were good lads but from the club's point of view I considered it was best if they moved on.

"There will be more comings and goings in the very near future. I have taken stock and believe things are starting to take shape even though we were beaten by Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics in the FA cup last week. It's all about getting the right balance and I've now made the signings of Lee Andrews and Mark McLeod permanent."

Andrews, previously with Carlisle United and Torquay United, has played in the last two matches while McLeod turned out twice for Cassidy when he was boss of Workington last season. He was released by Darlington before spending some time in Sweden.

Today, Blue Star line up against Chorley in the UniBond League First Division North at Kingston Park and Cassidy is hoping that a trio of players will be fit, adding: "I had to substitute a couple at half time last Saturday but with a bit of luck we'll have McLeod, David McTiernan and Ben Webster in contention. …
