DESPITE his considerable experience in both the private and publicsectors, including working for both Hackney and Tower Hamlets Councils, KevinPower had reached a stage in his career when he felt he needed a professionalqualification to provide tangible, marketable proof of his skills andmotivation. Having already completed a year-long Diploma in Management Servicesat Greenwich School of Management, he applied to be head of Finance and SupportServices at Wandsworth Council in 2002and decided to request funding for an MBA programme as part of the package.

"I firmly believe that my outlook and my mentioning the MBA course gavesignificant impetus to my interview, especially as the council was keen todevelop the position and maintain its quality reputation," he recalls. "I knewit was important to communicate my enthusiasm and ambition, not just for me butfor the development of the role at Wandsworth." Once appointed, Power, 42,returned to Greenwich, opting for the Executive MBA programme because itallowed him to continue to work full-time: it is taught over 24 months throughseven weekend seminars and three Saturdays.

"[The course] gave me essential insight into every aspect and the structure ofcorporate management, including finance, human resources, marketing andresearch," he says. "It gave me the means to not view situations in isolation,to understand the structure of organisations and the ability to assimilateinformation. I loved the location and atmosphere at the school and felt Ibenefited from the quality of the lecturers and the opportunity to network withmy peers." In recent years the MBA degree has become the foremost academicqualification for managers. Academics and industrialists alike have recognisedthe value of the degree in developing staff for the challenges of the rapidlychanging business environment. …
