COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK; Georgia Tech WR Is out of Hospital

Article excerpt

Georgia Tech receiver Correy Earls was released from a Charlottesville, Va., hospital on Sunday after suffering a head injury in Saturday's game against Virginia.

Earls, a redshirt freshman, was carried off the field on a stretcher after colliding with Virginia defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald.

Earls was rushed to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he passed a series of radiological tests.

"We took precaution yesterday because our worst fear was that there could be damage to the cervical spine," Georgia Tech team physician John Xerogeanes said Sunday.

JU PLAYERS HONORED

Jacksonville University running back Rudell Small was named Pioneer Football League offensive player of the week, and kicker Michael Zacco was named special-teams player of the week after the Dolphins' 55-10 win over UNC-Pembroke.

Small, a freshman from Ocala, tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game with five.

Zacco tied the JU record for extra points in a game, hitting all six of his attempts.

It's the second consecutive year Mitchell has been benched early in the season.

"Blake's had a lot of pressure on him" and that has led to erratic performances, Spurrier said. "So we're going to give Chris Smelley a chance right now."

The loss dropped South Carolina four spots in this week's rankings. …
