THE FTSE 100 closed down 69 points on Tuesday at 6396.9 as challenging credit market conditions left investors nervous.

On the upside, hedge fund manger Man Group rose 11.5p to 535p after reporting that assets under management have risen to EUR68b from EUR61.7b at the end of March.

Utility National Grid climbed 19p to 780p after gas from The Netherlands began flowing into the UK after a prolonged outage.

Real estate stock Hammerson bounced 12p to 1140p after comments from Stephen Hester of sector peer British Land suggested he expects a correction in commercial property prices.

In the mid caps, Wellstream Holdings the manufacturer of parts for the oil pipeline industry jumped 75p to 774p after saying that 2007 results are likely to be significantly above expectations.

On the downside, the mining sector came under pressure after its recent fine run. Vedanta Resources dropped 145p to 2191p and Antofagasta tumbled 53.5p to 790p.
