DICKINSON Dees LLP fields recognised talent in IT/outsourcing expert Andrew Scott and IP expert Mark Pearce. Highlights of 2006 included advising on IT services and systems migration issues in around 40 deals where such issues were a material part of the transaction. A diverse client base includes financial institutions, local authorities, pension fund trustees and SMEs. The firm acts for Newcastle United FC, managing its trade mark portfolio and advising on brand protection issues both in the UK and overseas.

Alex Shiel leads the four-partner IP/IT team at Ward Hadaway, which includes Judy Baker, Tim Toomey and Peter Hornsey. Its trade mark registration and portfolio management service continues to expand, and new clients for 2006 included Barratt Homes and House of Hardy. The firm advised on a number of high-profile Freedom of Information Act requests, and also acts for the Centre for Excellence in Life Sciences.

Eversheds LLP's practice covers the full gamut of TMT work, from serious branding portfolios to complex biopharma deals.

Janet Knowles and Antony Gold head up the IP side, while Paula Barrett and Bill Gilliam deal with the IT side. Recent highlights include advising on a major IT dispute for a large plc, involving a system with global coverage valued at over pounds 50m. Key clients include North Tyneside Council, Expedia Travel and Newcastle International Airport.

Muckle LLP's IP team is the sole legal adviser to Dott07, the first of a series of biennial design initiatives called 'Designs of the time' taking place across the country over the next 10 years. This is a joint venture company owned by One NorthEast (Muckle LLP is on its IP panel) and the Design Council. Gill Hunter in particular receives clients' plaudits for her work, and is noted for her 'dynamic approach'.

Watson Burton LLP's successful expansion of its IP and IT practice has led to a significant number of instructions from new blue-chip clients, namely ICI and Huntsman Petrochemicals. …
