Triathlete Dottie Dorion and her husband, former long-distance runner George Dorion, are widely recognized in the Beaches area for their philanthropy and their celebrations with athletic themes.

Three years ago, they hosted their combined "145th Birthday 5K Run" at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, celebrating Dottie's 70th and George's 75th birthdays.

This year, on Sept. 8 at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, the Dorions combined philanthropy with the 5-kilometer run/walk celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, announcing their donation of $100,000 to Volunteers in Medicine (VIM-Jacksonville).

VIM, co-founded in 2003 by Dottie Dorion and physician James Burt, is a volunteer-operated medical clinic that provides free outpatient services to working people who are uninsured.

"We've participated in triathlons with Dottie for 18 years all over the world, but we wouldn't have missed this 5K run for anything," said Jacqueline Riley, who came from Cambridge, England, with her husband, Gordon, for the event.

Charlotte Evans of Carmel, Calif., who was a bridesmaid at the Dorions' wedding, was also there.

"We've stayed close all these years," said Evans. "In fact, Dottie mentored my daughter and helped her become a triathlete."

"George and Dottie are mentors to everyone they meet," said Marty Cleghorn, the Dorions' longtime personal assistant. "George is the quiet one who stays in the background and supports all of the great things Dottie does for so many."

An environmental consultant and energy research chemist, George Dorion is his wife's biggest fan. …
